The Sustainable Manufacturing Lab (SML) at the Free University of Bolzano envisions a future where innovation and sustainability converge to transform manufacturing processes into efficient, resilient, environmentally responsible and human-centred systems. We strive to lead the transition to a circular economy by empowering industries with cutting-edge research and sustainable practices that inspire global change.

Our mission is to drive the advancement of sustainable manufacturing through applied research, industry collaboration, and hands-on education. Based at NOI Techpark Bruneck, we develop innovative solutions that enhance resource efficiency, promote the circular economy, and foster resilience across manufacturing and supply chains. By engaging with industry, policymakers, and international peers, we aim to shape a sustainable industrial future that balances economic growth, environmental protection, and societal well-being.

The SML serves as a platform to bring sustainable manufacturing concepts from theory into practice and to support companies in the transformation towards environmentally conscious manufacturing.

We believe in the twin transition (Digital & Green) using advanced technologies, data-driven solutions and systemic approaches to minimize the environmental, social and economic impact of manufacturing.

While the Sustainable Manufacturing Lab in Bruneck focuses on green technologies and methods our sister laboratory, the Smart Mini Factory (SMF) at NOI Techpark in Bolzano concentrates on digital technologies. See also https://smartminifactory.it
